Bio Roger is a tourism planning and development consultant with extensive experience in the development of sustainable tourist destinations, particularly in emerging markets. He has carried out multiple assignments in eastern, west and sub-Saharan Africa, eastern Europe, the Mediterranean and Middle East, and South Asia. He is employed regularly as a technical expert and team leader by UNWTO and other international organisations, government development agencies and consultancy firms. His expertise covers a wide range of strategic and practical interventions, including the drafting of national, regional and local tourism master plans, formulating growth or recovery strategies, and carrying out situation assessments or scoping missions. Most recently he has carried out a situation assessment in Jordan for the EBRD, overseen the development of a major pilgrimage growth strategy in Saudi Arabia, helped draft a new national tourism strategy for Moldova (USAID), reviewed the national strategies of Guinea-Bissau (UNWTO) and Armenia (GIZ), and formulated a destination management plan for Mozambique Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site. For UNWTO, he has led teams that delivered a new Tourism Policy and 10-year Tourism Master Plan for the Government of Uganda. Also for UNWTO he drafted the marketing and cultural heritage strategies in the Rwanda Tourism Master Plan that has led to significant growth. In India, he led a UNWTO team in implementing a Tourism Development Master Plan for the State of Punjab. Bilingual in English and French, Roger has more than 40 years’ experience in the tourism sector. His career began as a graduate trainee with the British Tourist Authority, where he trained in all aspects of destination marketing before postings to Amsterdam and Paris. Roger has been Chairman of the Tourism Consultants Network since 2012, Europe's leading trade association for tourism consultants.
